Of course you want a dot-com extension. Everyone does. But one of the biggest mistakes you can make choosing a domain name is picking one that is difficult to scan and impossible to pronounce. By “difficult to scan” I mean a word or phrase that bares so little resemblance to a real word or phrase that it is resistant to mental retention and you forget it the moment you hear it. An example might be when two or three common English words are severed and reconnected into one impossible mishmash as in “landarchass,” a shortened version of a business name that a fictional businessman might choose instead of “landscaping architects and associates” (by the way, if you’re interested, this name is still available as a dot-com; I didn’t dare use a real name).
Don’t do it! You’re better off picking a name that at first glance has nothing to do with your business than one that the average person can’t say without stumbling over his tongue. The reason is simple: if you can’t say it you can’t remember it much less spell it when needed. And with the coming proliferation of new domain extensions both in Latin Script and Arabic, Cyrillic or whatever, the chances of someone misunderstanding a domain name will increase exponentially.
Dedicated domain name server hardware requirements
Dedicated domain name servers run for long periods without interruption making hardware reliability and durability extremely important. Although servers can be built from ordinary computer parts, dedicated domain name servers need to be built from specialized hardware with low failure rates in order to maximize up-time. The use of fast, high capacity hard drives and large computer fans or power supplies that ensure the servers continue to function in the event of a power failure should never be compromised. Hardware redundancy setup is highly advisable as this will ensure your system continues running even if one of the hardware happens to fail. Installing more than one instance of hard wares such as power supplies and hard disks will guarantee your system high up-time which is quite essential in the case of dedicated domain name servers. It is highly advisable to use memory devices which detect and correct errors as these will help in reducing system failures or data corruption.
Domain name software requirements
Just like any other servers, the dedicated domain name servers must have an operating system on which to run different applications. The two most prominent operating systems providers are Microsoft and Linux. The use of either of the operating systems will depend on how familiar the administrator is with ether. Other than the operating system, there are other application soft wares that are vital for the full control of your dedicated domain name server. This may include the control panel software, antivirus soft wares among others depending on the needs of each individual.
Creating An Add On Domain
1) Register your new add on domain with a domain name registrar.
2) Direct the domain name server (DNS) information of your new add on domain to the same DNS of your web host.
3) Give an allowance of 1 to 2 days for the DNS to flourish over the Internet before uploading files or documents.
4) Log in to your control panel or web hosting manager and move to the add on domains.
5) You need to fill in three fields, namely: the new domain name, the user name, and a password.
6) Click the ‘Add Domain’ button, and wait for a couple of minutes for the system to set-up an add on domain name.
7) When completed, you can already start uploading your index pages, images, and other relative information
