Take A Look At Your Website Through New Eyes

Even if they typically don’t make sales online, it is difficult for an author or a speaker to effectively market their book or speaking services without an effective website.   However, there is still the misconception that having a website is just a matter or purchasing a template or finding someone on Craig’s List. 

There are a number of tests you should put your website through to make sure it is doing what it should, even if you don’t have a complicated or flashy website.  With the Internet becoming a global economy and more and more people marketing through websites, competition is rough out there. 

On the Internet, it’s all about the first impression.  And that impression can last less than a minute as click happy page viewers come and go.  How would you rate your website in the following areas?

1.    Do People Know Where They Are Right Away? 

Does your logo have a visual meaning and describe your business?  Before visitors start to read, they see, and so it is critical to grab their attention fast.  You want to make sure to use a lot of pictures and other graphics to explain to viewers what your services will mean to them. 

Words are important as well, though, so make sure your company name is clearly visible immediately and that you have a tagline that tells people what you do.  It is also important for every page to have a powerful title that communicates to your viewer immediately where they are and what they can expect from the page. 

Being creative and unique is great in a website, but don’t be modest.  Make sure your site communicates boldly what you can offer your future customers. 

2.    Have you checked out your computer on various viewing platforms and browsers?

In the world of computers, nothing is created equal.  What looks great on Firefox might be a mess on Windows Explorer, and even on different versions of each.  Check to be sure.  Ask people you know and trust to view your website on at least 5 different monitor sizes, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems, and on PC as well as MAC computers.

Check a blackberry and iPhone as well if your customers may be using a cell phone to view your site.  It can be surprising how different a site can look on different viewing platforms.  

3.    How functional is your website?

There is nothing more annoying to a page viewer than to sit and wait for a page to load. In most cases, that potential customer clicks away before even seeing what you have to offer and becomes a former potential customer before you know it. 

Take the time to go through your entire website page by page as though you were     your ideal customer.  How quickly do your pages load?  If there is a link, does it work and does it go to where you expected it to?  Do you see spelling errors or other grammatical problems?  Can you find the contact us information quickly and easily? 

The ultimate goal of this Website Reality Test is to ensure that your potential customers are welcomed into your site rather than driven away.  Make it easy for them to get around your site, find what they want (and what you’re selling) and become your customer.

Creating A Network Of Web Promotion Contacts

Would you like to ditch the day job and to earn your fortune online? Are you looking for a person or company to build you a website? Are you looking into ways to promote your website? Would you like to see an increase in traffic to your website? These are all questions to which a couple of years ago I would have answered yes to. I now have built up a network of people who I always use to help me in these particular fields.

It is very worth while to build up a network of internet specialists who you can call upon to help you to develop and promote your website. These people should be honest, charge a fair price, be willing to help and give advice and be happy to work quickly with good communication.

My interest in all things internet based started back in 1999 and I thought it would be the ideal way to promote my stuttering therapy business. I must admit that at this point I knew nothing about the ins and outs of the net and did not know anybody who could build or promote a website.

I spent quite a long time phoning people who were advertising in places such as the yellow pages, the newspaper and of course the internet itself. The prices some of these people quoted were a lot higher than I could afford. I now have come to realise that these prices were basically a rip off as I have now met some brilliant web designers who are happy and willing to build a website at far cheaper rates.

As an example a contact of mine now builds me a type of information portal site for £150 plus free lifetime hosting. I have been working with this contact now for a number of years and he is extremely reliable and has taught me a lot about how the web works etc.

I have also met other contacts who are experts in a professional web promotion service. I have learnt a lot from these people and would now like to think of myself as some kind of expert. I now think that I know quite a lot about how to promote and a market a website. I have around eighty sites myself, which I constantly attempt to attract more visitors to each of them.

Whatever your business, whether it is to do with DVD authoring or even offering a personal injury claims service, it essential that you try to obtain as my visitors to your website as possible.

The way I attract this additional traffic is by attempting to build up the amount of one-way backward links to each site. One way of doing this of course is by writing articles like the one you are reading. Summing up, ensure that you do not become a number victim of the “internet sharks” or the “internet scammers” as some people call them. Shop around for your web promotion, marketing and design quotes and make sure that they can deliver any promises that they make. Meet and build up a network of web experts who you can learn to trust and establish a long term business relationship with.
